Early Life in Revolutionary Cuba
I was born in Santa Clara, Las Villas, Cuba, in August 1959, during a turbulent time when Fidel Castro and his revolutionaries were overtaking our island nation. Las Villas, a central province rich in culture and trade, had the important port city of Puerto Sagua, a major hub for imports and exports. The revolutionaries faced a fierce battle to conquer this province, and I vividly remember my mother hiding in the back of our house while bullets flew through the city.
Witnessing Injustice and Family Struggles
Growing up under the Cuban dictatorship, I witnessed first-hand the injustices and oppression that plagued our country. One day, a disheveled man arrived at our home, and as I looked closer, I realized it was my father, returning from a forced labor camp. My father had been a successful businessman, but after rejecting the new regime and attempting to leave the island, he was condemned to forced labor as punishment.
Emigration to Freedom and Path to Law
In 1968, my family and I were fortunate to leave Cuba through the freedom flights, established in 1965 after negotiations by Ted Kennedy and other U.S. senators. Experiencing oppression and tyranny, followed by emigration to the United States, gave me a profound appreciation for living in a free, just society. After settling in Los Angeles, California, I developed a deep interest in government and law, eventually earning a Bachelor of Arts from California State University and a Juris Doctorate from Nova South-eastern University in 1988.
